Really the question is "Is it even possible to record DirecTV shows to a PC?
Directv cannot allow you to transfer video because of DRM (digital rights management). All broadcasts on Directv and Dish network are labeled as protected and the DVR boxes encrypt those video files to prevent forced copies. There is no legal software or hardware to transfer video files from these boxes.
Here are some ongoing discussions about this:
I consistanly record to both my Lite On 5045 and 2 phillips HD720 and DVDR720??. Lite on & 1 phillips have hard drives. I can record to HDD or DVD with Direct TV.
FWIW, I have both a HD and cheapo SD DirectTV box and record with S video from both of them. Also record HD OTA, but of course it is not recorded in HD.
I did have problems using the component inputs, getting the message you get, but not with S video. I see little or no quality difference between S video and component in the recordings.
Good luck. Don't know what to tell you to do.
Seems Sony is a zealot about content protection.
Over anything that exits the box. Once the decryption occurs within the box and the smart card, it should be abld to be captured via coax or composite or s-video or 2-wire 300ohm connector :P
Thanks for this info. Couple more question, if you don't mind:
1. I assume you can't connect a DVDR on the incoming sat coax and pass that thru to the sat receiver, like you can do with OTA or cable? Bear with me on this...I assume you normally wouldn't do that cuz the sat signal is ALL scrambled/proprietary, so the DVDR tuner can't be used anyway. BUT, if you have a DVDR with an "active passthru" which maintains or amplifies signal strength, it would be "OK" to connect it first on the coax if it provides a slightly better/stronger signal?
2. I assume some people say you record via line connection cuz it's "just better" but you could record via coax if you wanted?
ANother question you may not be able to asnwer: is Dish different than Direct in this regard. I've read of people having to put their DVDR's on Channel 3, or some weird thing like that????
